The Importance of Hashtags in 2020

Hashtags have always been relevant to use on Social Media, to reach a wide range of people and to get your content seen. But are hashtags needed anymore? What purpose do they serve and how are the Algorithms changing?

With the recent changes in Facebook and Instagram’s algorithms, it’s estimated that 70% of your company’s organic social media content is going unseen. Hashtags can help your content get discovered.

They help increase your social media presence as they make your content viewable by anyone who has an interest in your hashtag as it goes beyond just your followers. Hashtags can help you build a brand for your business or yourself by engaging with customers and joining the conversation about what’s trending. A trending topic of hashtags nowadays is, do they work? Many people who use them will claim their content is not being seen by as many people even though they are using lots of relevant hashtags.

While you can reach people using your hashtags, most of us are using the same hashtags, such as #likeforlike #instagrammer. So this reduces your chances of your content being seen by a lot of people. On the other hand, using unique hashtags can be beneficial if you have a unique business or interest.

You are allowed to use up to 30 hashtags on a post so do avail of that! Having a mix of popular, industry-relevant and niche hashtags is best practice. Get creative and invent a hashtag specifically for your business. You can also encourage your community to use this hashtag too.

When it comes to where you place your hashtags, there have been a lot of theories on whether adding them to the caption or in the first comment is better for engagement. According to Instagram, neither is favoured over the other.

As you can see, using hashtags can still get your content seen and can reach a lot of people. Using hashtags for your business can help you get noticed by clients, potentially drive sales and gain more followers.
